Luke George is a Melbourne based dance artist who grew up in Tasmania and currently finds himself working a lot in New York City. His first encounter with dance was through performing, choreographing and improvisation – this continues to be the backbone of his work. George is a graduate of the Victorian College of the Arts. His practice as performer, choreographer and collaborator has taken him throughout Australia, Europe, Asia and North America.
George has collaborated and performed in works by Phillip Adams BalletLab, Miguel Gutierrez and the Powerful People (NYC), Jo Lloyd, Gideon Obarzanek/Chunky Move, K.J. Holmes (NYC), Stephanie Lake, Frances d’Ath, Shelley Lasica, Jerril Rechter, ITOH Kim (Tokyo), Neal Medlyn (NYC) and Deborah Hay (solo performance project).
As a choreographer George’s work has been presented in Australia by Dancehouse, PICA, Dance Massive, Next Wave festival, Melbourne Fringe, in Norway by BIT Teatergarasjen and Sandnes Kulturhus, in the Netherlands by Noorderzon and the Grand Theatre, in New York City by AUNTS, Abrons Arts Center, Movement Research at Judson Church and MR Spring Festival 2013 and in Tokyo by Kagurazaka Die Pratze. Choreographic highlights include NOW NOW NOW, LIFESIZE and HOME all of which have received Australian Dance and Green Room award nominations. George was Artistic Director of Tasmanian youth dance company Stompin 2002-2008, during which he directed and choreographed new works with hundreds of young performers and presented work in Ten Days on the Island and Arts House.
